What this TPRM lab is
The TPRM Beginner Lab is a free, hands-on third-party risk management simulation in which you personally run a vendor risk assessment on a cloud payroll provider from intake to approval, and finish with a verified certification of completion.
Most third-party risk learning stops at theory. You read what a risk tier is, you memorise the lifecycle diagram, and then the first real assessment lands on your desk and none of it tells you what to do with a SOC 2 report that has a carved-out subservice organisation. This lab closes that gap. You are given a live engagement, a manager who briefs you the way a real TPRM manager would, and a stream of case facts from questionnaires, evidence packs and business stakeholders. Your job is to place every fact where a practising analyst would place it.
The scenario is a payroll platform that will hold employee identity data, bank details and salary data for the whole workforce. It is a realistic first assessment: important enough to matter, common enough that almost every organisation runs one. You work it across seven lifecycle stages with ten decisions in each stage, seventy decisions in total.
It takes roughly 40 to 55 minutes, it runs in the browser with no downloads or tooling to install, and it is free for every registered learner. Cards and assessment areas reshuffle on every attempt, so there is no answer pattern to memorise - you either understand the reasoning or you do not.

What you will practise, stage by stage
The lab walks the full third-party risk lifecycle in the order a real programme runs it, and each of the seven stages trains one specific piece of practitioner judgement.
Stage 1 - Vendor intake and business context
You separate what the business actually wants from what the vendor is selling. You capture the service description, the data in scope, the process it supports and the stakeholders who own it, and you learn why an intake record that is vague about data makes every later stage guesswork.
Stage 2 - Inherent risk classification
You tier the vendor before any evidence arrives. This is the stage most beginners get wrong, because inherent risk is driven by data sensitivity, criticality, access and regulatory exposure, not by how good the vendor's controls look. You practise justifying a tier you could defend in a challenge.
Stage 3 - Due diligence and evidence collection
You decide which evidence answers which question: SOC 2 Type II scope and exceptions, ISO 27001 certificate versus statement of applicability, penetration test summaries, business continuity test results, subprocessor lists, insurance certificates. You learn to tell assurance from marketing.
Stage 4 - Risk assessment and findings
You convert evidence gaps into written findings with an impact and a likelihood rather than a vague concern. You practise the distinction between a control gap, an evidence gap and an accepted design choice.
Stage 5 - Remediation planning
You turn findings into commitments with owners, dates and verification methods, and you separate what must be fixed before go-live from what can be tracked after it.
Stage 6 - Residual risk evaluation
You recalculate risk after agreed remediation and compensating controls, and you decide what the organisation is genuinely being asked to accept. You practise writing a residual position that an executive risk owner can sign.
Stage 7 - Approval and ongoing monitoring
You close the assessment properly: approval conditions, contract and DPA clauses, reassessment cadence, continuous monitoring signals and the trigger events that reopen the file. Onboarding is not the end of third-party risk, and this stage makes that concrete.
Skills and deliverables you walk away with
By the end of the lab you have produced the same working artefacts a TPRM analyst produces on a real vendor onboarding, and you can talk through each one in an interview.
A defensible inherent risk tier
A tiering rationale built on data sensitivity, business criticality, access model and regulatory exposure.
A due diligence evidence plan
The right evidence requested for the right reason, with a clear view of what each report can and cannot prove.
Written assessment findings
Control gaps and evidence gaps stated as findings with impact, likelihood and a rating you can justify.
A remediation plan
Pre-go-live conditions separated from post-go-live tracking, each with an owner, a date and a verification method.
A residual risk decision
A clear statement of what remains after remediation and who is accepting it.
A monitoring and reassessment package
Approval conditions, contractual protections, review cadence and the trigger events that force an early reassessment.
Interview-ready vocabulary
The language of intake, tiering, assurance, findings, residual risk and continuous monitoring, used correctly and in context.
Who should run this lab
This lab is built for anyone who needs practical third-party risk experience and does not yet have a live vendor portfolio to learn on.
Career changers and new graduates: You want hands-on TPRM experience to talk about before your first risk role, without waiting for someone to hire you first.
New TPRM and vendor risk analysts: You are days or weeks into the role and want to run a full assessment once, safely, before you run one that counts.
GRC, audit and information security professionals: You know controls and evidence, and you want the vendor lifecycle wrapped around them.
Procurement, sourcing and vendor managers: You own the commercial relationship and want to understand what the risk team is asking for and why.
Consultants and MSP teams: You advise clients on third-party risk and want a clean, repeatable reference flow for the lifecycle.
How the lab is scored
There is no timer, no partial pass and no penalty for trying: you complete the lab only when all seventy decisions sit in the correct assessment area, and you can retry as often as you like.
A wrong placement is rejected immediately with a short coaching prompt that pushes your reasoning without handing you the answer. Correct placements lock in and the stage opens the next one. Progress is held for your session, so a reload does not lose your work, and every fresh attempt reshuffles the cards and the assessment areas.
That design is deliberate. The lab is not a quiz you can pass by recognising an option; it only completes when you can explain, by placement, why each fact belongs where you put it.
In the end you get a verified certification of completion
Finish every stage and LearnTPRM issues you a verifiable TPRM Beginner Lab Certification of completion, free of charge, with a unique certificate ID that anyone can check on the public verification page.
There is no fee, no exam booking and no upsell. The credential is issued by LearnTPRM.com the moment the lab is completed inside your account.
Each certificate carries your full name, the lab title, the level, the award date and a unique certificate ID. Anyone - a recruiter, a hiring manager, an audit lead - can paste that ID into the public verification page and see whether the credential is genuine. You can download the certificate as a high-resolution PDF or PNG from your dashboard at any time and attach it to a CV or a LinkedIn profile.
Frequently asked questions
What is a TPRM lab?
A TPRM lab is a scenario-based simulation in which you run a real third-party risk activity yourself instead of reading about it. In this lab you assess a live vendor engagement across all seven lifecycle stages and make seventy individual assessment decisions.
Are there free TPRM practical exercises online?
Yes. This lab is a free, browser-based TPRM practical exercise for beginners. It needs only a free LearnTPRM account, and it ends with a verifiable certification of completion at no cost.
How do I get hands-on TPRM experience without a job in third-party risk?
Run a full assessment on a realistic scenario and be able to explain your decisions. This lab gives you the engagement, the evidence and the stakeholder pressure, and produces artefacts - a tiering rationale, findings, a remediation plan, a residual risk decision - that you can discuss in an interview.
How long does the beginner lab take?
Most learners finish in 40 to 55 minutes. There is no time limit and your progress is kept for the session, so you can pause and come back.
Do I need TPRM experience or a certification to start?
No. The lab assumes no prior third-party risk experience. Each stage is briefed by your simulated manager and every wrong placement is coached, so the lab teaches while you work it.
Is the lab certification free and verifiable?
Yes. It is free, it carries a unique certificate ID, and it can be verified publicly on the LearnTPRM verification page by any employer or recruiter.
Which lab should I start with?
Start with the Beginner Lab if you have not run a full vendor assessment before. Move to the Professional Lab, a live fourth-party crisis at a regulated bank, once the lifecycle feels familiar.
What does this lab cover that a TPRM course does not?
Sequencing and judgement. Courses explain what inherent risk, due diligence and residual risk mean; the lab makes you decide which specific fact is an inherent risk driver, which is assurance evidence and which is a finding, under a realistic engagement.
Can I put this lab on my CV or LinkedIn profile?
Yes. List the TPRM Beginner Lab Certification with its certificate ID and the verification link. The scenario, stages and decisions are concrete enough to describe in an interview.
Does the lab work on a phone?
Yes. Placements support both drag-and-drop and tap-to-place, so the lab runs on mobile, tablet and desktop.
